The painting by Evelyn De Morgan, The Gilded Cage, was her final work before her death in 1919. It depicts a wealthy woman looking longingly
out the window at a group of dancing gypsies.
A book and jewelry lie discarded on the floor. Her husband is present, looking unhappy as
well. This is not one of those confusing
pieces of art that leaves us scratching our heads about its meaning. The message is clear: a gilded cage is still a cage.
What I want to point out is that both the man and the woman are in the cage.
Think about it.
